1. Introduction :
The DUCSU and JACSUS elections of 2025 marked an unprecedented turning point in the history of student politics in Bangladesh. Shibir’s unimaginable and overwhelmingly dominant victory not only altered the balance of student politics but also sent an early signal for national politics. Previously, the usual scene in DUCSU was the absolute dominance of the Chhatra League and the strong presence of the Chhatra Dal. Yet, in this election, Chhatra Dal was practically defeated, and Shibir’s victory made clear the shift in the mindset of the student community. A similar picture is likely to be seen in RACSUS and CHACSUS as well.
2. The Results of DUCSU–JACSUS and the Debacle of Chhatra Dal :
In the DUCSU election, Shibir’s candidates secured the majority of seats. The same scenario was observed in JACSUS. In many cases, Chhatra Dal’s candidates were humiliated right at the polling centers and ultimately could not survive in the race. So much so that, regarding the upcoming CHACSUS election, Chhatra Dal has already expressed its apprehension by declaring, “We will consider whether we should participate in the CHACSUS election or not” (Ref : The Ajker Patrika, 12 September 2025, p1).
This very statement proves that BNP’s student wing is now gripped by fear and despair.
3. Analysts’ Opinions :
(1). Opinion of AKM Zakaria, Associate Editor of Prothom Alo:
“After August 5, 2024, numerous allegations of extortion and muscle-flexing were brought against leaders and activists of the BNP and its various wings, including Chhatra Dal. Many believe this is one of the reasons students turned away from Chhatra Dal. Considering these, in the DUCSU election students chose Chhatra Shibir as an alternative. If the same calculations apply in national politics, then this will be a matter of danger for BNP as a party.”

(2). Comment of Zahid Reza Noor, Associate Editor of Dainik Ajker Patrika:
“But even before coming to power, the way BNP practiced politics of looting and muscle dominance in various regions of the country, ordinary people have been astonished. … Will the arrogance BNP displays on the political field without power not affect its student wing? … Such an issue may have influenced the DUCSU election.”
(Ref : The Ajker Patrika, 12 September 2025; Editorial Section, p:4)
(3). Statement of BNP leader Barrister Rumin Farhana :
At 9 p.m. on 11 September, in the “Rajneeti” discussion on Jamuna TV, Rumin Farhana said,
“The fundamental basis of politics is public welfare, but unfortunately, BNP and Chhatra Dal in many cases have deviated from that welfare-oriented politics. Instead of sacrifice and service, they have often prioritized the arrogance of power. This has weakened their relationship with the people, and the reflection of that is visible among the students as well.” In this context, she pointed to the example of welfare-oriented politics practiced by Chhatra Shibir and Jamaat.

4. Implications for National Politics :
To view the results of DUCSU and JACSUS merely as campus-based contests would be a mistake. It is a reflection of national politics.
According to a section of students, choosing Chhatra Shibir means embracing the symbol of ‘stability and discipline’.
The allegations of muscle dominance, extortion, and reckless behavior against Chhatra Dal have been punished through students’ votes.
As per Barrister Rumin Farhana’s observation, BNP and Chhatra Dal’s deviation from welfare-oriented politics is undermining their public base, and this is being reflected in student politics as well.
If BNP carries the same negative image into the national election, voters will choose their rival force.
5. Conclusion :
The ‘landslide victory’ of Shibir in the DUCSU and JACSUS elections has given a new direction to Bangladesh’s politics. The debacle of Chhatra Dal is a major warning signal for BNP. As made clear by analysts and BNP’s own leadership, drifting away from welfare-oriented politics and clinging to power-centric practices have become their greatest weakness. Unless the party restructures itself in time, it will face an even bigger setback in the national elections. Therefore, the results of these university elections are not just minor campus events, but also an early lesson in understanding the broader political future of Bangladesh.
