1. Introduction :

The education sector of Bangladesh is a sensitive part of the national heritage. Education is not only a medium of knowledge dissemination, but also a bearer of values, morality, and culture. Therefore, any change in education policy profoundly influences the nation’s ideology and the character-building of future generations. Recently, under the interim government, certain measures have created controversy, which has caused discomfort among religious-minded people.

2. Attack on Religious Education during Sheikh Hasina’s Era :

During Sheikh Hasina’s fascist regime, the position of religious education in the school syllabus was deliberately weakened.

Religious education marks were reduced from 100 to 50.

At the same time, the number of religious teachers was decreased in an attempt to marginalize the subject.

This was essentially a planned initiative to suppress Islamic values, which resulted in widespread anger among rural and religious communities.

3. Expectations after the Fall of Fascism :

After the fall of the fascist regime, the general expectation of the people was—

Religious education would be reinstated to 100 marks.

Respect would be shown to Islamic values in the education sector.

Such measures could have balanced the education system and earned the trust of the people.

4. Controversial New Initiative :

But unfortunately, instead of filling that gap, a new controversy has been created. Without restoring the importance of religious education, arrangements have been made to increase music practice in schools. In other words, music teachers are replacing religious teachers.

Such measures are hurting the sentiments of religious-minded people. Because reducing religious education and expanding music practice means further marginalization of Islamic values.

5. Consequences and Risks :

If the interim government continues such controversial measures, several negative outcomes may follow:

Loss of trust among religious-minded people.

Increase in social division and conflict of opinion.

The credibility of the interim government will be questioned.

Instability may arise in the education sector.

6. Recommendations :

Some urgent recommendations are given for the interim government to refrain from recklessness in the education sector:
(1). Religious education must be immediately reinstated to 100 marks.
(2). Adequate recruitment of religious teachers must be ensured.
(3). Music practice in schools should not be mandatory, but may be kept as an optional subject.
(4). National heritage, religious values, and public sensitivities must be given the highest importance.

7. Conclusion :

The interim government must remember that the only way to earn the trust and confidence of the people is through just and balanced decision-making. Religious education is the moral foundation of society. Therefore, instead of engaging in controversial activities, reinstating the dignity of religious education would be the wisest course of action .
