The July Revolution of 2024 was a unique event in the history of Bangladesh. Through the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s long-standing fascist rule, the people’s movement seized victory. But today, in this post-revolutionary reality, we see that the very political structure for which blood was shed to dismantle has, in fact, remained intact. Since President Chuppu, Army Chief Waker, and the central mechanisms of the administration remain unchanged, the people are being deprived of the expected transformation.

In this context, the role of VP Nur is significant. From the Quota Reform Movement of 2018 to the reinstated Quota Movement of 2024, he stood as a face of resistance against fascism. After Sheikh Hasina’s downfall, the people’s expectation from the interim government was— the formation of a revolutionary government; the implementation of the July Charter; the election of a Constituent Assembly; and the drafting of a new constitution. But the interim government bypassed the revolutionary agenda and instead chose the strategy of merely arranging elections as a way to exit.

Here lies the root of the political crisis. Revolution is not merely a change of power; the essence of revolution is the transformation of the state structure. If that structure remains unchanged, then the old fascism will rise again. This fear is now becoming a reality. New attempts of political rehabilitation centering on the Jatiya Party and the 14-Party Alliance are underway, which are directly linked to India’s active role. The Indian intelligence agency RAW has stepped into the field with a plan to dismantle the revolutionary spirit—its first target was VP Nur.

The attack on VP Nur on 29 August proves that a part of the state apparatus is still loyal to fascism. If segments of the military and police forces become determined to suppress the revolutionary leadership, then other leaders of the July Revolution will meet the same fate. VP Nur has now become a symbol—without a revolutionary government, no revolution can be sustainable.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus or the BNP—both have politically benefited from the July Revolution, but neither has ever raised the demand for forming a revolutionary government. Because, a revolutionary government means the fundamental transformation of the state structure, which would destabilize their own equations of power. Therefore, the true heroes of the revolution now face a dual challenge:

1. To prevent the re-establishment of old fascist forces;

2. And to establish a genuine revolutionary government.

In political analysis, it can be said—the July Revolution now stands at a crossroads. If a revolutionary government is not established, then the future of the heroes of the revolution will be like VP Nur—attacked, annihilated, and lost to history. But if a revolutionary government is established, then a new horizon will open in the state structure of Bangladesh.
