The Rise of Islamic Politics Behind the Failure of Secularism — Professor M. A. Barnik

1. Reasons for the Rise of Islamic Political Forces:

An invisible storm is rumbling across the sky of Bangladeshi politics. Secular political forces—particularly the Awami League and the BNP—have become disconnected from the hopes and aspirations of the people. Their long-standing corruption, extortion, factional conflicts, and tendencies toward dominance have disillusioned the public. From this failure, a new political current is emerging—liberal Islamic politics.

Among the organizations representing this trend, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir are being revitalized. Those who were once politically cornered are now appearing before the new generation as organized, ideological, and disciplined forces.

2. A New Equation in DUCSU, CUCSU, and Gono Bishwabidyalay:

In recent elections at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU), and Gono Bishwabidyalay, the strong position of Chhatra Shibir and the collapse of Chhatra Dal stand as concrete evidence of this political shift.

Behind Chhatra Dal’s defeat lie—

BNP’s mismanagement,
the extortion and misappropriation by Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal,
attempts at campus domination,
internal clashes and lack of leadership.

In contrast to these negative trends, Chhatra Shibir is becoming acceptable to the younger generation through its ideological firmness, discipline, and connection with students.
Where once DUCSU and CUCSU were under the control of Chhatra Dal, today the victory of Chhatra Shibir signals a new political equation.

3. Jamaat’s Strategy and Future Direction:

Jamaat is no longer merely a religion-based party. They have restructured their political discourse, strategy, and organizational framework. The combination of Islamic social justice and democratic values has made their political stance more realistic and acceptable.

Their new message and organizational strategies are resonating among the youth. Many young people, who see secular parties as symbols of corruption and hypocrisy, are now searching for an alternative political future within Jamaat-Shibir.

4. The Future Political Landscape:

Today’s political shift is not merely the weakness of old powers; it is the rise of a new force that may redefine Bangladesh’s political future.

Following the fall of the Awami League, the hope that the BNP could emerge as an alternative power is steadily fading. The history of internal conflict, disorder, and extortion within Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal has shattered the trust of the new generation.

In this context, organizations like Shibir and Jamaat are quickly filling the vacuum that has been created.

5. The Voice of an Alternative Islamic Force:

Just as the morning sun bids farewell to the darkness of night, so too does a new light of Islamic politics begin to spread through the failure of secular politics and the chaos of the mainstream.

If this light advances with ideological discipline, social justice, and democratic values, it may well establish itself as an alternative force in the future politics of Bangladesh.
Across Bangladesh, a growing public inclination toward an alternative Islamic force is evident—one that carries the signal that the seat of power in the coming days may well fall into their hands.
