Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has not yet been delivered; yet the interest generated by international media even before the speech has opened an important window into understanding Bangladesh’s current diplomatic position and the country’s new political chapter in the international arena. He is scheduled to deliver his speech on September 24, and this will be his first address to the United Nations General Assembly as Prime Minister.
2. Why So Much Interest Before the Speech?
The interest of the international media cannot be explained merely by the usual news value attached to a state leader’s foreign visit. Several factors are working together here.
First, this is Tarique Rahman’s first UN address as Prime Minister. Second, he is expected to deliver his speech in Bengali—which will be a visible presentation of Bangladesh’s own language and identity on the international diplomatic stage. The Indian India Today has already published a report highlighting his first UNGA address, the Rohingya crisis and climate issues.
In other words, even before the speech begins, the international media is essentially asking—how is the new Bangladesh going to present itself on the world stage?
3. Bangladesh’s ‘New Political Chapter’ on the UN Stage
Tarique Rahman’s visit is not merely a diplomatic visit for Bangladesh; it is also an important opportunity to present the international identity of the new government.
According to information provided by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, the Prime Minister’s speech is expected to address the country’s democratic journey, the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation. In addition, issues such as women and youth empowerment, education, healthcare, the Rohingya crisis, equitable use of technology and reform of the multilateral system may also come under discussion.
Therefore, before international observers, this represents an important moment to present Bangladesh’s national priorities and future diplomatic position.
4. A Speech in Bengali—Alongside Symbolic Significance, a Diplomatic Message
Tarique Rahman’s decision to deliver his speech in Bengali has attracted particular attention.
Delivering a state address in one’s own language on a multilingual and multinational platform like the United Nations is not merely a matter of emotion; it encompasses three dimensions—cultural identity, sovereign self-identity, and political communication with one’s own people.
The delivery of the address in Bengali to world leaders, together with its translation into an international language, may make Bangladesh’s own voice more visible.
5. One of the Most Important International Demands
The Rohingya crisis is receiving particular importance in the Prime Minister’s New York programme. At a high-level event on September 23, Bangladesh is expected to call for strengthened international cooperation and raise the issue of the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
The key diplomatic challenge for Bangladesh here is to bring the Rohingya crisis back to the centre of the international agenda and, rather than limiting it merely to the question of humanitarian assistance, increase international pressure and cooperation toward a sustainable political solution.
6. Climate Change and Rising Sea Levels
Bangladesh has long been active in international climate diplomacy as one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.
At this year’s UN programme as well, issues such as climate finance, adaptation, technology transfer, loss and damage, and climate justice are expected to receive importance in Bangladesh’s message. On September 24, Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to deliver the opening remarks at a high-level meeting on the existential threat posed by rising sea levels.
Here, Bangladesh’s message is relevant not only to Bangladesh itself but also to developing countries and island nations facing similar risks.
7. Bangladesh’s Economic Diplomacy on the World Stage
Another dimension of Tarique Rahman’s New York visit is economic diplomacy.
Alongside various United Nations programmes, meetings are scheduled with representatives of the World Bank, international organisations and the business community. Reports have also mentioned engagement with international business corporations, including Boeing.
This means that Bangladesh is not viewing the UN visit merely as a platform for political statements; it is also seeking to utilise it in the areas of investment, trade, development cooperation and economic partnership.
8. Bangladesh on the Same Stage, but the Global Situation Is Changing
Another issue is particularly important. When Tarique Rahman takes the UN stage to present Bangladesh’s message, the world itself is going through deep geopolitical tensions.
During the general debate on September 22, U.S. President Donald Trump made strong remarks on Iran, the Middle East and international security. On the other hand, UN Secretary-General António Guterres placed emphasis on ending wars, climate change, global governance of artificial intelligence and reform of the United Nations.
Against this broader backdrop, if Bangladesh’s message remains focused only on national issues, its international resonance may remain limited; conversely, there is an opportunity to connect Bangladesh’s own interests with the broader questions of world peace, climate, humanitarian crises, multilateralism and development cooperation.
9. What Does the International Media’s Interest Indicate for Bangladesh?
One point needs to be clearly distinguished here. The interest of the international media should not be viewed directly as support for any particular political statement. Rather, the news value has emerged from the convergence of several developments—the new government’s first UNGA appearance, the Prime Minister’s first speech, the address in Bengali, the Rohingya crisis, climate change and Bangladesh’s new international diplomatic position.
International media outlets, including India Today and New Indian Express, have already published reports on the possible contents of his speech.
At the very least, this indicates that the speech has already acquired advance news value for the international media.
10. The Main Question Now—What Message Will Reach the World on September 24?
Expectations have been created before the speech; but its real significance will be determined by the content of the speech, its presentation and the international response.
If Bangladesh presents issues such as democracy, economic development, climate justice, Rohingya repatriation, regional peace and multilateral cooperation as a coherent diplomatic message on the world stage, the speech could become an important document for explaining Bangladesh’s international position.
However, its assessment will have to be based on how the international media receives the speech after it is delivered, which issues it quotes, and which issues it gives importance to.
