1. An Instance of Defiling the Sanctity of Worship:

The incident of portraying Dr. Muhammad Yunus as a demon or rakshasa in a Durga Puja pandal in West Bengal, India, stands as an unprecedented example in South Asia’s communal and cultural landscape. A puja pandal generally symbolizes the worship of Goddess Durga, artistic expression, and social harmony. Replacing that with the image of a Nobel laureate economist as an “asura” is not a mere artistic attempt; rather, it is a deplorable act that has tainted the sanctity of the puja itself.

2. The Infiltration of Dishonorable Politics into a Sacred Space:
A puja pandal is often called a “cherished sacred hall” because it is not only a religious ritual but also a symbol of coexistence, joy, and cultural integration. But when symbols of political hostility or social division are given space there, the ritual loses its true essence. By comparing Dr. Yunus to an asura, a form of dishonorable politics has entered the pandal, which is both inappropriate and disgraceful to religious tradition.

3. Why This Is Unprecedented:
In the history of South Asia, puja or other religious rituals have often carried social messages—poverty alleviation, the importance of education, the awakening of women’s power. But portraying a specific living individual as an “asura” is effectively turning a sacred ritual into a weapon of personal and political hostility. This is unprecedented and represents a dangerous trend of transforming a religious ritual into an aggressive caricature.

4. Who Bears the Responsibility?
This incident is not only the decision of an artist or the pandal committee; it also creates a broader social responsibility.

Pandal authorities: They are responsible for safeguarding the sanctity of the puja, yet they allowed politics to enter.

Society and local leadership: If visitors remain silent without protest, that silence becomes a form of tacit support.

Politics and media: The tendency to turn puja into a stage for political satire has been silently encouraged.

5. A Violation of Human Rights:
Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a symbol of global humanitarianism and economic emancipation. Representing him as an “asura” is not only a disparaging symbolic act but also a violation of his personal human rights. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, every individual has the right to live with dignity and respect. This incident has infringed upon that right, which deserves condemnation even in the international arena.

6. The Legal Responsibility of the Indian Government:
Those who have committed this act have not only insulted a religious ritual but have also undermined the fundamental rights of Dr. Yunus. Therefore, the Government of India should take legal action in this regard—

First, hold the pandal authorities accountable and ensure responsibility.

Second, issue clear guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.

Third, diplomatically assure Bangladesh that such incidents will not recur.

7. The Damage to Religion and Culture:
When a puja pandal depicts symbols of hostility, it creates division within Hindu society itself. The glory of the Hindu sacred hall lies in tolerance and magnanimity; reducing it to a caricature of hatred will make religious rituals increasingly untrustworthy in the future. It may also harm communal relations.

8. A Call for India’s Official Statement:
The portrayal of Dr. Yunus as an asura in an Indian puja pandal is an unprecedented event that has tainted religious sanctity and clearly violated his human rights. Such actions not only demean an individual but also undermine the dignity of religious rituals and culture. The responsibility of allowing dishonorable politics into a sacred space must be borne by today’s society, and the Indian government must take swift legal and moral action in this regard. At the same time, we wish to know what the official statement of the Indian government is on this matter.
