*Ramadan and Eid on the Same Day Across the World: The Story of My Support for Tarique Rahman’s Proposal* —Professor M A Barnik

1. The Trial by Fire of Conscience*:

A proposal sometimes does not remain merely a proposal—it becomes a mirror of its time, a test of perception, and a trial by fire of conscience.
When the call came to observe Ramadan and Eid on the same day across the world, many saw it as a political narrative; I saw it as a civilizational possibility.
Dhaka, Makkah, Moscow, New York, Sydney—five different skies at five ends of the earth, yet the moon is but one.
If the Christian world can celebrate Christmas on the same day, why cannot the Muslim Ummah begin Ramadan on the same date under one sky?
It was in search of an answer to this question that I wrote an article—and thus began the storm of criticism.

*2. The Trap of the Question, the Beacon of Reason*:
A television journalist asked me—
“Do we perform Salah at the same time across the world?”
I was not surprised to hear the question; rather, I smiled gently. For the question was a misdirection of logic disguised as comparison.
The time of prayer is determined by the course of the sun—the light of Fajr, the shadow of Dhuhr, the twilight of Maghrib.
But the commencement of Ramadan and Eid depends on the sighting of the moon—an astronomical reality.
To place these two different standards of the sun and the moon on the same scale is like trying to measure the currents of two rivers with one yardstick.

*3. 1986: The Historic Conference in Amman*:
In 1986, in Amman, the capital of Jordan, a historic gathering of jurists from the Muslim world was held—the session of the Fiqh Academy of the OIC.
Representatives from 57 Muslim countries assembled there to reach a unified decision.
The sighting of the moon—should it be local, or global?
A representative from Bangladesh also took part in that meeting. Professor Mawlana Dr. Maruf of the Arabic Department of the University of Dhaka (whose interview could dispel many doubts) signed the consensus of the world’s scholars there.
So the question arises—
Were the scholars of these 57 countries ignorant?
Does their ijma (consensus) carry no value?

*4. The Dialogue Between Science and Shariah*:
Professor Dr. Shamsher Ali, President of the International Al-Hilal Committee—a scientist.
Did he not speak through the reasoning of science rather than mere emotion?
Astronomy today can precisely determine when and where the moon will be visible.
In a world where we exchange information via satellite in seconds, must news of the moon still wait until dawn?
It was there that my thinking changed.
In their company, I realized—this is not merely a matter of religious sentiment; it is a question of knowledge-based unity.

*5. The Silent Debate Within Fiqh*:
Imam Abu Hanifa once gave the opinion—
If the moon is sighted at one end of the earth, Muslims at the other end may also begin Ramadan.
Yet in practice, followers of the Hanafi school often prioritize local moon sighting.
This debate is not new in the history of fiqh—but in today’s technology-driven world, it has acquired a new dimension.

*6. The Storm of Criticism and Self-Reflection*:
I was told—
“As a knowledge-based researcher, how could you support such a proposal?”
I reflected—
If knowledge merely hangs on the wall in the form of degrees, then it is not knowledge;
Knowledge is a flowing river that finds its path in new currents.
I supported Tarique Rahman’s proposal not out of personal allegiance, but out of a dream for possible unity within the Ummah.

*7. One Sky, One Moon, One Ummah*:
If at the first Sehri of Ramadan, Dhaka, Makkah, Cairo, London, Sydney make their intention together—
If on the morning of Eid, the Takbir resounds on the same day—
Then it would not merely be a coincidence of dates;
It would be a bridge between hearts.
The moon is not divided—
It is we who have divided the horizon.
I supported that proposal because I believe—
Unity does not mean uniformity, but shared realization.
And if the question arises—
“Why did you support it?”
Then my answer is only this—
Where reason, tradition, and science join hands, I cannot remain a silent spectator.
This report is not a defense of any individual;
It is a stance in favor of an idea.
If, standing under one sky, we can look toward one moon,
Then observing Ramadan and Eid on the same day—
Is not an impossible fantasy,
But a history waiting to become possible. 🌙
