*1. Absurd Plan*:

Upon coming to power, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has announced the promise of excavating 20,000 kilometers of canals and planting 500 million trees—“I have a plan.” Though presented under the guise of environmentally friendly development, at first glance this statement may seem promising, but a deeper analysis reveals it as a political slogan in conflict with science, geography, and practical planning.
This report systematically analyzes the fact-check of the two claims, geographical feasibility, environmental risks, and the emptiness of the plan.

*2. The Claim of 20,000 km Canal Excavation vs. Reality*:

(1) Verified Facts:
Total area of Bangladesh: ≈ 147,570 sq. km
Total length of existing rivers, canals, and streams: ≈ 24–25 thousand km
Canals filled/encroached in the last 50 years: ≈ 40–50%
(2) Analysis :
Excavating 20,000 km of new canals means—
Creating a network almost equal to the existing waterways.
Acquisition of vast agricultural land.
Demolition of settlements and infrastructure.
Social and environmental instability.
Managing water resources.
Experts suggest that in Bangladesh, re-excavation of filled canals (re-excavation) is the only logical path, not creating new canals. Talking about 20,000 km of new canals shows a lack of understanding of geographical and demographic realities.
(3) Fact-check Verdict :
Excavating 20,000 km of new canals is unrealistic;
Partially feasible only as re-excavation of existing canals.

*3. 500 Million Trees: Large in Numbers, Impossible in Reality*:

(1) Scientific Calculation:
Land required per medium-sized tree: 8–12 sq. meters. Therefore,
Minimum land for 500 million trees: ≈ 5,000 sq. km
≈ 3.4% of Bangladesh’s total land
(2) Land Reality:
Forest cover has already dropped to 10–11%
Agricultural land is rapidly decreasing.
Urbanization and industrialization are expanding.
In other words, Bangladesh does not have vacant land enough to plant 500 million trees.
(3) Another Important Fact:
In large-scale afforestation projects, average survival rate of trees is 50–60%.
Hence, even if 500 million trees are planted, in reality only 250–300 million may survive.
Fact-check Verdict:
The claim of planting 500 million trees at once is unrealistic and misleading.

*4. Not a Plan, but Politics of Numbers* :

A state-level plan must include—
Implementation timeline,
Budget,
Land sources,
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA),
Species selection,
Administrative framework.
Unfortunately, in Tarique Rahman’s “I have a plan” statement—
No timeline,
No budget,
No map,
No environmental analysis.
Therefore, it is not a plan; it is politics of throwing numbers.

*5. Environmentalism or Deception* :

Risks of unplanned canal excavation—
Ingress of saline water,
Disruption of natural water flow,
Destruction of aquatic biodiversity,
Risk of planting wrong species,
Water scarcity,
Reduced soil fertility,
Damage to local ecosystems.
The absence of explanation on these fundamental risks proves that the environment is not the goal here—it is merely a political façade.

*6. Brainchild Imagination, but Not a Plan* :

A plan is not a slogan. A plan means understanding geography, respecting science, and acknowledging real limitations.
However, the promise of 20,000 km canals and 500 million trees fails these criteria.
Thus, the “I have a plan” statement raises a question upon analysis—
Is it really a plan,
Or a political confession of “numbers exist, but no vision”?
The future of state governance cannot rest on such empty plans.
