In a report published in Prothom Alo on August 15, 2025, it was noted that Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser to the Interim Government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in an interview with CNA TV, clearly acknowledged: “If elections are held without justice and reforms, the old problems will return.” By this, he meant that fascism and dynastic politics would once again be reinstated in the state system. His remark has been perceived by both domestic and international observers as a significant warning.

However, political analysts are asking—if he himself recognizes this risk, then why is he seeking to proceed directly to elections without taking visible steps toward judicial reforms, restructuring the Election Commission, adding anti-dynastic clauses to the constitutions of political parties, and enacting legal measures to ensure human rights?

Experts believe that this dual stance could create a dangerous constitutional trap. On one hand, he publicly emphasizes the necessity of reforms, yet on the other, he is not taking the time or initiative to implement them—something that could indirectly protect the interests of ruling elites and powerful political families.

Another serious dimension here is that—by organizing elections without legitimizing himself and the leaders of the mass uprising, Dr. Yunus may, in effect, be placing both himself and those uprising leaders in an extremely difficult post-election situation. Without a legal foundation and political protection, a transfer of power often opens the door to retaliatory politics. History shows that after revolutions or mass movements, if leadership fails to legally consolidate its position, it can quickly become politically marginalized.

The people’s sacrifice in the July 2024 mass uprising to end autocracy and dynastic rule can only be preserved through political reforms. Otherwise, the upcoming election may push the state back into the old corridors of power—where fascism, dynastic politics, and political repression will be reborn.

According to analysts, if Dr. Yunus truly wishes—consistent with his own statements—to prevent the re-entry of fascism and dynastic politics, then he must immediately:

1. Ensure judicial independence and reform

2. Restructure the Election Commission

3. Ban dynastic politics in the constitutions of political parties

4. Bring to trial those accused of human rights violations

5. Ensure implementation of the July Charter

Otherwise, his awareness will remain nothing more than words, and after the election the country may once again plunge into political darkness—where the situation could become most unfavorable for Dr. Yunus and the leaders of the mass uprising.
