What Kind of Election is This Without Resolving the Revolutionary Transformation After the Mass Uprising? —–Professor M. A. Barnik

1. Introduction:

The mass uprising of July 2024 was a landmark event in the history of Bangladesh. In that blood-soaked rebellion, the people dreamed of being freed from fascism and establishing a new, justice-based state system. But more than a year after the uprising, no desired revolutionary transformation has been resolved. The flames of revolution have turned into smoke; whereas they were supposed to burn fiercely.

2. The Unyielding Wall of Fascist Accomplices:

Even today, President Chuppu, Army Chief Wakar, and the fascist accomplices of Sheikh Hasina remain firmly entrenched in the administration and judiciary. They are like chameleons—though their color may change, their character has not. They still hold a portion of power, and as a result, the revolutionary current is repeatedly subjected to conspiracies. This situation is much like a river whose course has been broken by the people, but where the old dam has once again been patched up and stood in place.

3. Attacks from Foreign Powers and Internal Conspiracies:

The people gave their lives to bury fascism, but today that grave is being dug up again and again. Domestic and foreign conspirators seek to bury the revolution and reimpose the old chains. It is like vultures lurking in the darkness of night, waiting to pounce upon the corpse at the first opportunity.

4. Leadership Vacuum and Incomplete Command:

The people wanted Dr. Muhammad Yunus to lead the revolutionary government. But under his leadership, no administrative command has yet been established. The country’s administrative setup remains incomplete; there is no post-revolutionary cohesion. The situation is like a boat without oars—the people are standing midstream, but there is no direction.

5. The Premature Farce of Elections:

The question arises—when administrative control itself has not been secured, on what logic is an election being considered? The main promise of the uprising was radical transformation, uprooting the old system to establish a new state. But arranging elections in February without doing that is like trying to cultivate a flower garden without first removing the weeds hidden beneath the soil. Such a step risks rotting the harvest of the revolution.

6. The July Charter and Constituent Assembly Election:

What the people expected after the uprising centered around the July Charter—which clearly stated that there would be a Constituent Assembly election by popular vote, and that body would draft a new constitution. Because the Constitution of 1972 was copied from colonial structures; it was not created through the collective participation of the people. This time, the people do not want to see that mistake repeated.

The people’s demands are precise:

No election without the drafting of a new constitution.

A parliamentary election is meaningless without state-building.

The Constituent Assembly must be the foundation of revolutionary transformation.

7. The People Will Not Accept Elections Without Constitutional Drafting:

A revolution does not mean only a change of government; it means restructuring the state apparatus. Just as a broken house cannot be made new by painting it—without changing the foundation it will collapse again. In the same way, holding elections without a new constitution will, in reality, bring about the resurgence of fascism.

8. Conclusion:

The mass uprising is a symbol of the people’s sacrifice. Without ensuring revolutionary transformation in return for that sacrifice, holding premature elections will in fact be a betrayal of the people’s dream. The people have leveled mountains into plains, but no new crops have yet been sown upon them. The people’s voice is now one and the same—State-building first, elections later.
