দIn the great-power game of global politics, Donald Trump regarded himself as a seasoned player and set out to establish what he perceived as America’s unchallenged dominance over the world. From across the Atlantic, Trump believed that a combination of pressure, sanctions, and military threats could corner Iran into a position where every move it made would conform to Washington’s calculations. The world, he seemed to believe, would tremble before an American victory! But history has never followed the arithmetic of one side alone. Trump’s calculations, too, failed to add up.

At the heart of Trump’s equation for victory was his desire for quick results. He believed that economic sanctions would intensify pressure on everyday life in Iran, weaken its political leadership, and ultimately force Tehran to return to the negotiating table from a position of submission. Iran, however, did not view that pressure merely as a crisis; instead, it transformed it into a test of self-reliance. The Iranian people, political institutions, and security establishment came to understand that this struggle was not simply a confrontation between a government and an external power; it was also a struggle for national dignity and the freedom to make sovereign decisions.

In an old bookshop in Tehran, an elderly man named Ali was once telling his grandson, “A nation that places its future in the hands of others can never be truly free.” The words may not appear in any diplomatic document, but there are few explanations more powerful for understanding the psychology of Iranian resistance. There is no denying that sanctions have inflicted wounds on Iran’s economy and made life harder for ordinary people. Yet that pressure did not translate into political surrender.

Instead, Iran placed greater emphasis on regional diplomacy, defence capabilities, technology, and alternative economic relationships. It expanded engagement with neighbouring countries, forged new equations with global powers, and demonstrated that an attempt to isolate a country does not always leave it alone; sometimes, it compels that country to seek new partners.

Another weakness in Trump’s strategy was his overly simplistic reading of Iran’s internal realities. Iran is not a one-dimensional state; it has disagreements, debates, demands for reform, and economic discontent. Yet when external pressure brings the question of national security to the forefront, many internal divisions temporarily become secondary. Despite political differences, many Iranians came to believe that accepting change at the dictates of an external power was simply unacceptable.

It was precisely here that Trump’s calculations began to unravel. He believed that pressure would weaken Iran; instead, the pressure made Iran more cautious, more strategic, and more resolute. He believed that intimidation would force his adversary to retreat; instead, Iran translated fear into a political language and transformed it into a symbol of resistance. He believed that unilateral decisions could determine international realities; yet global politics has been steadily evolving towards a more multipolar order.

One evening in Tehran, a young researcher named Nasir was telling his colleague, “We may not have won every battle, but we have not surrendered our right to make our own decisions.” That sentence captures the essence of Iran’s strategic success. Victory does not always mean defeating an adversary; sometimes, preserving one’s position and sovereignty intact is itself a significant victory.

Yet this story should not be turned into one-sided triumphalism. The impact of sanctions on Iran is real, its economic difficulties are real, and the suffering of its people is real. A positive analysis does not mean denying these problems; rather, it means recognising the power of strategy, patience, and national identity that can operate even amid profound crisis. Iran’s experience demonstrates that military or economic pressure cannot always control a nation’s political will.

Ultimately, Trump’s equation for victory was shattered not by any single event, but by a multilayered resistance rooted in reality. The national consciousness of the Iranian people, the strategic calculations of its leadership, regional relationships, alternative international partnerships, and long-term patience combined to render that equation ineffective.

The sun had fully risen over Tehran. The city was once again coming alive. Shop shutters were being raised, people were beginning to fill the streets, and history was quietly writing a new chapter. The lesson of that chapter is clear: however flawless the strategy of a powerful state may appear, if it ignores a people’s sense of dignity, national interests, and strategic patience, the arithmetic of victory can ultimately turn into a narrative of defeat.
