1. Discussion on Artificial Intelligence in the Election Process:

One of the major foundations of Bangladesh’s democratic advancement is free, fair, and impartial elections. The more transparent and accurate the election process is, the stronger democracy becomes. But for a long time, various complexities and irregularities have been alleged in Bangladesh’s electoral system—addition of fake names in the voter list, capture of polling centers, ballot stuffing, doubts about results, etc. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can open a new door of possibilities. However, it also comes with numerous challenges. A detailed discussion is presented below.

2. Potential Benefits of Artificial Intelligence:

(1). Enhancing the Accuracy of Voter Lists:
In Bangladesh’s elections, repeated allegations have surfaced that voter lists include deceased persons, duplicate names, or false information. By using AI-driven data analysis systems, these problems can largely be solved. For example, by cross-checking the voter list with the national ID database and birth-death registration, the list can be automatically updated. As a result, fake voters will be removed while new voters can be easily added.

(2). Ensuring Security at Polling Centers:
With AI technology, smart CCTV cameras can be installed at polling centers. These cameras will not only record video but also perform real-time face recognition and anomaly detection. This will make it easier to prevent incidents such as fake voter identification, attempts to create chaos, or capture of centers.

(3). Increasing Voter Participation:
Using AI-based data analytics, it is possible to determine which regions have lower voter turnout. Based on such information, awareness campaigns can be carried out to increase participation. In addition, mobile applications can be used to inform voters about polling centers, timing, and other details.

(4). Speed and Transparency in Result Counting:
In vote counting, using AI-based machine learning algorithms will reduce human errors. Integrating AI with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can ensure quick and accurate result announcements. At the same time, results automatically updated on online platforms will reduce opportunities for manipulation.

(5). Combating Fake News and Rumors:
During elections, fake news and misleading propaganda on social media are a major problem. By using AI-powered content filtering systems, these rumors can be identified and controlled. This will ensure that voters receive correct information and confusion is minimized.

3. Challenges and Risks of Artificial Intelligence:

(1). Data Security and Privacy Threats:
If voters’ personal information (name, address, national ID number, etc.) is used in AI systems, it may face the risk of cyberattacks. Data leaks could severely damage citizens’ privacy.

(2). Algorithmic Bias:
If AI systems are not designed neutrally, results may be influenced in favor of certain groups or political parties. For example, if face recognition technology fails to identify voters of a particular class or region correctly, it will create discrimination.

(3). Cyber Attacks and Dependence on Technology:
AI-dependent voting systems can become targets of hacking. External powers or internal groups could alter election results through cyberattacks. Moreover, over-reliance on technology may make the electoral process uncertain.

(4). Limitations in Rural Areas:
In rural Bangladesh, technological infrastructure is still weak. Due to a lack of electricity, internet, and technological literacy, it will be difficult to implement AI-based systems there. This may create inequality between urban and rural regions.

(5). Lack of Human Accountability:
In crucial processes like elections, leaving everything to machines will reduce human accountability. If errors occur, it will be difficult to determine who bears responsibility.

4. Future Actions:

To implement AI in Bangladesh’s electoral system, some prerequisites must be fulfilled—

(1). Creating a Legal Framework:
It is essential to enact specific laws to protect information and citizens’ rights in the use of AI.

(2). Ensuring Transparency and Neutrality:
AI algorithms must be developed in an open and neutral way so that no political party gets undue advantage.

(3). Improving Technological Infrastructure:
Electricity and internet facilities must be ensured in rural areas as well.

(4). Human Resource Development:
Election Commission officials must be trained in the use of AI technologies.

(5). Strengthening Cybersecurity:
The voting system must be protected through strong firewalls, encryption, and cybersecurity measures.

5. Using Technology with Public Trust:

If Artificial Intelligence is applied in Bangladesh’s electoral system, many positive changes can be achieved. It will facilitate voter list updates, strengthen security, ensure accurate and faster results, and make rumor control easier. However, data security, technological dependence, bias, and rural infrastructure limitations will pose major challenges. Therefore, before applying AI, correct policies, transparency, and above all, political goodwill are required.

To strengthen democracy, technology must indeed be used, but the technology must increase people’s trust and participation, not diminish it—that is the most important factor.
