In Bangladesh’s electoral system, a symbol is not merely an identifier but rather a reflection of the emotional connection between the people and the party. For the Awami League, the “Boat Symbol” is one that has been deeply tied to the history of the Liberation War and rural culture. Recently, when the Election Commission (EC) decided to preserve the Boat Symbol for the Awami League, political analysts naturally raised a question—was this truly a step to safeguard historical honor, or a cunning strategy to revive the party in the future?

2. The Political Value of a Historic Symbol:

Since its inception, the Boat Symbol has been the main driving force of the Awami League’s political journey. In the 1970 elections, the Boat Symbol unified the Awami League’s victorious support base. During the Liberation War of 1971, the symbol stood as a kind of “dream symbol.” As a result, the boat has established a permanent historical position in the public psyche.

However, history shows that once-influential Muslim League lost both its symbol and organizational strength, eventually fading into political marginalization. Similarly, questions are arising for the Awami League—will the party, due to its failed leadership and public resentment, gradually become dysfunctional like the Muslim League?

3. EC’s Partiality in the Name of Preserving the Symbol:

According to the EC’s explanation, “The Boat Symbol is a representation of the Awami League’s historical contribution and national unity. Hence, it has been preserved.”
But critics argue that this is essentially political life-support. Despite the Awami League’s organizational weakness and the people’s loss of trust, by preserving the Boat Symbol, the EC is creating a backdoor plan to once again place the party on the political stage in the future.

4. Emergence of a New Debate over Symbol Ownership:

In Bangladesh’s political history, there are precedents of symbol changes. For instance, when Jamaat-e-Islami was banned in 1972, it lost its “Star Symbol,” and later upon regaining approval, it had to adopt a different symbol. In the case of BNP, the “Sheaf of Paddy Symbol” has survived for a long time, still representing its identity in the eyes of the people.

In this context, the question arises for the Boat Symbol—if the Awami League becomes politically dysfunctional, why should the symbol remain stuck with them? Many believe that if the Boat Symbol is handed over to an emerging force such as the National Citizen Party (NCP), the symbol would preserve its popularity and heritage.

5. Revival vs. Transfer of the Symbol:remains

If the Boat Symbol remains with the Awami League, then once the party revives in the future, it will once again be able to exert political influence by using the symbol’s power. But if the symbol is transferred to another effective party, then even if the Awami League revives, it will no longer enjoy the advantage of the boat. In that case, the people’s emotional attachment to the symbol will be linked to a new force, which will be more effective for political balance.

6. EC’s Hidden Cunning in the Boat:

This decision of the EC is not mere preservation of a symbol but a hidden cunning strategy for the politics of the future. If the Boat Symbol is reserved exclusively for the Awami League, it amounts to playing with the people’s trust. Logically, if the symbol is handed over to a capable new leadership, the democratic arena will gain new momentum, and the emotional attachment of the people to the symbol will be connected to a truly national force.
