1. Introduction :

In the country’s agriculture-dependent economy, fertilizer is a strategic commodity. If the flow of fertilizer is not normal across seasons, food production, market prices, and the lives of farmers are all severely affected. Recently, reports of artificial fertilizer shortages in various field-level areas have created tension among farmers. Despite adequate government reserves, a crisis in the market suggests the possibility of a deliberate effort to create instability.

2. Artificial Crisis: Where is the Problem:

The investigation has revealed three major issues:

a. Hoarding and Creating Artificial Shortages

Some dealers and warehouse owners are withholding fertilizer by reducing market supply.

Showing lower fertilizer availability during the production season is part of their tactic to create panic among farmers.

Suddenly increasing the prices of DAP, Urea, and TSP—this further deepens the crisis.

b. Lack of Transparency in the Transport Chain

Slow transportation and showing “no stock” on paper do not match the ground reality at all.

Delaying the delivery of fertilizer to local markets is creating artificial queues.

c. Attempts to Create Instability for Political Purposes

It is believed that a certain group is using this crisis as a “weapon” to increase farmers’ dissatisfaction against the government.

Such incidents have been repeatedly observed around election periods or agricultural seasons.

3. Impact on Farmers:

The biggest victims of the artificial crisis are ordinary farmers:

If fertilizer is not available on time for seedbeds and planting, production decreases.

Buying fertilizer at higher prices is increasing farmers’ debt burden.

Reduced agricultural production raises the risk of increasing food prices.

4. Government’s Position and Measures:

According to the government—

National fertilizer reserves are not at risk; allocation is sufficient.

District administrations, police, and the agriculture department have been instructed to conduct joint monitoring.

If hoarding is proven, licenses will be canceled and fines and criminal actions will be taken.

Monitoring cells have been activated at field level.

5. Analysis of Possible Motives:

Three possible motives emerge from the data analysis:

(1) Economic profit: Selling fertilizer at inflated prices by showing artificial shortages.

(2) Political pressure: Spreading farmers’ dissatisfaction to increase political instability.

(3) Control over the supply chain: Attempting to establish monopoly control over the fertilizer business.

6. Actions and Recommendations:

a. Transparent Supply Management

Publishing daily fertilizer stock data in every union.

Digital monitoring of dealers.

b. Strict Enforcement

Mobile courts against hoarding and manipulation.

Immediate punitive measures including license cancellation.

c. Direct Complaint Mechanism for Farmers

Launching a hotline and app for instant complaint submission.

Ensuring the presence of agricultural officers in the field.

7. Conclusion:

Creating an artificial fertilizer crisis is not a mere disruption of the normal market system—it is a planned and profitable manipulation that directly affects farmers, markets, production, and national stability.
If this network is not identified and controlled, disorder in agriculture will increase, which may eventually lead to a food security crisis.
