1. Why the Boat Symbol Is Being Preserved:

In the current political context of Bangladesh, the role of the Election Commission has once again become questionable. Although the Awami League was declared banned after the fall of its government, the “Boat” symbol still remains preserved in the Election Commission’s database. This is not merely a technical issue—it raises deep concerns about political sympathy, administrative bias, and the credibility of the democratic process.

2. Retaining the Opportunity for Awami League’s Participation in Future Elections:

After the fall of the Awami League government through a nationwide mass uprising in July 2024, the interim administration suspended the party’s registration. Subsequently, even though the Election Commission formulated new registration policies, the Awami League’s electoral symbol “Boat” remained preserved in the Commission’s database in an unused state.
Now, allegations have surfaced that by keeping the symbol preserved, the Commission is paving the way for the Awami League’s return and its possible participation in future elections.

3. Constitutional and Administrative Responsibility:

The Election Commission of Bangladesh is a constitutional body whose primary duty is to conduct elections impartially and not grant institutional advantage to any party. However, retaining the symbol of a banned party contradicts administrative fairness.

Expert Opinion: Former Professor of the University of Dhaka, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, stated—

> “Preserving the symbol of a constitutionally banned party means the Election Commission is opening the door for future political favors. This is morally unacceptable.”

4. Allegations of Political Sympathy:

The Election Commission has long faced allegations of bias. Several officials of the current Commission were appointed during the Awami League regime and were known for their political allegiance. Consequently, many analysts view the Commission’s behavior as part of a “repayment of political debt.”

A senior political analyst remarked—

> “Preserving the Boat symbol is not merely an administrative act; it is a kind of ‘political message.’ The Commission has yet to free itself from the shadow of its old guardianship.”

5. Questioning the Legitimacy of Future Elections:

If the Election Commission fails to nullify the Awami League’s symbol, serious questions will arise regarding the legitimacy of upcoming local government and national elections.

Sarjis Alam, Convener of the National Citizens’ Forum, commented—

> “A party is banned, yet its symbol remains valid—such a contradiction renders any election unacceptable. The Election Commission will lose the people’s trust.”

6. Crisis of Democratic and Moral Confidence:

Such behavior by the Election Commission is damaging the very foundation of democratic trust. The core of a credible electoral system lies in neutrality, transparency, and political equidistance. If the Commission grants advantage to a specific party, the democratic journey of the future will become even more uncertain.

7. A Decision Must Be Taken Regarding the Boat Symbol:

It is imperative to immediately remove the Awami League’s “Boat” symbol from the database and to issue an official notification declaring that no banned party or its symbol shall be used in any future election.
If the Commission fails to do so, it will become impossible to restore public and political confidence in it.

We believe—

> “If the Election Commission does not stop distributing the Boat symbol, then holding any future election under this Commission will be unethical and inappropriate.”

This incident signifies a crucial moment in Bangladesh’s democratic transformation. An administrative decision of the Election Commission has today turned into a moral test of democracy—whether it will protect party inheritance or rebuild public trust. The answer to this question will determine the political future of Bangladesh.
